On Friday night, Umphrey’s McGee returned to St. Paul, MN’s Palace Theatre for the first show of a two-night run. Aqueous, the Buffalo-based four-piece rock powerhouse, handled the show’s opening duties, on the heel’s of their recently released genre-spanning record, Color Wheel.

Umphrey’s McGee opened up the first set with “Puppet String” > “2nd Self”, getting the Friday night party off to a rocking start. Following “2nd Self”, the six-piece wove in and out of “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” and a cover of The Police’s “Masoka Tanga”, the latter played for the first time since 2/13/2014, a gap of 459 shows. Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss were firing off smoking hot guitar licks throughout the entirety of the massive segue, with Ryan Stasik, Kris Meyers, and Andy Farag powering Umphrey’s tenacious rhythm section.

Following the extended intertwining of “Miss Tinkle’s” and “Masoka Tanga”, Umphrey’s McGee rocked through “Seasons”, “The Fussy Dutchmen”, and “Push The Pig”, before offering up another bust-out, “Snake Juice”, last played 350 shows ago. UM brought the first set to a close with a hard-hitting rendition of “Conduit”.

After a brief set break, Umphrey’s McGee returned to open the second set with a tease of the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street”, before properly opening up the set with “Remind Me”. Cinninger was firing off on all cylinders, as Bayliss followed the behemoth guitar players every move with precision. UM then moved into “Miami Virtue”, before an improv-heavy placement of “Mail Package”, “Dump City”, and “Slacker”. Meyers found a funky pocket to connect with Stasik, as Cinninger continued to push the bar with an ever-evolving solo to bring “Slacker” to a halt. Following “Panama”, Umphrey’s brought it all back together with “Puppet String”, sandwiching the entirety of the show with the evening’s opener. A combination of “Dark Brush” and “Gulf Stream” served as the night’s encore.
