Last weekend, Umphrey’s McGee rounded out its early-winter 2025 tour with a four-night, three-city run in New York and New Jersey featuring stops at Sayerville, NJ’s Starland Ballroom (1/30), Port Chester, NY’s The Capitol Theatre (1/31, 2/1), and Huntington, NY’s The Paramount (2/2). Other than a few instances in which the band split up a song within a given night’s setlist, the worked through the weekend’s with a four shows without repeating any songs.
The run began on Thursday night at the Starland with a first frame highlighted by a strong “Kabump”, an unusually improvised “Uncommon”, and a sinister set-closing trio of “Go to Hell”, “End of the Road”, and “Cut the Cable”. After starting set two with “Andy’s Last Beer”, the band rattled off an extended “Resolution” that served as the set’s most memorable passage. A party-starting cover of Prince’s “1999” (the first in 352 shows) and a rocking “Ringo” eventually closed the set ahead of a “The Floor” encore.
On Friday night, Umphrey’s McGee set up shop at beloved Port Chester, NY rock palace The Capitol Theatre to begin a two-night run. Night one at The Cap featured a number of lengthy jams, with eight different songs pushing past the 10-minute mark and one—a massive set two-opening “Divisions”—clocking in at nearly 23 minutes in length. An always-welcome cover of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica” served as the encore.

The band returned to The Capitol Theatre the following night for what wound up being the stronger of the two Port Chester shows. Highlights from the Saturday night, 2/1/25 Umphrey’s McGee show at The Cap included the first rendition of The Bottom Half track “Never Cease” since 2009 (a gap of 1,440 shows), excellent first-set takes on “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” and “Booth Love”, a “Bridgeless” that began early in set one and came to a close late in set two, a first set-closing “Walletsworth” featuring Scotty Zwang on drums in place of Kris Myers, a thundering, 30-minute “In The Kitchen”/”Attachments” segment in set two, and an 18-minute “Slacker” to close the second frame.

One of the most memorable moments of Saturday night came late in set two when the band rode “The Linear” into a rare cover of Radiohead’s In Rainbows favorite “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” featuring Myers on lead vocals before rounding out the “Bridgeless” from earlier in the night. A “Pay the Snucka” encore added some extra oomph to a show that radiated “we came to f— s— up” attitude from the get-go. Extra bonus points to whoever was running house music for the St. Louis/Houston hip-hop setbreak soundtrack.

Finally, Umphrey’s McGee brought the first leg of its Cruising Altitude 2025 tour to a close on Sunday at The Paramount in Huntington, NY. In addition to a stellar “Hourglass” jam early in the first set, the performance notably featured a rare cover of Chick Corea’s “Señor Mouse”, a top-notch “Higgins”, and a second set-closing “40’s Theme”. After beginning the show’s encore with “Orfeo”, the band rounded out the night, weekend, and tour with a celebratory cover of Van Halen’s “Panama” (last played in 2018).
