Possibly the dumbest idea ever, and a complete waste of the pound sign, the hashtag has taken over any semblance of a normal conversation that people attempt to have these days. It used to be,
“Hey, how are you today?….I am fine. And you?” Now, it’s more like, “Hey, how are you? #dontanswer #alreadyknow #itsmonday #worksux #whenwillitbefriday”, which will be given the following response, “OMG, like so tired. #partiedtoomuch #onetoomanycocktails #needsleep #wheresmybed #nevergoingoutagain”.
Now, I am 32 years old, and I understand I am getting too old to understand the kids these days, but if this isn’t one of the most ridiculous fads, then call me crazy (#oldmanriver). I actually used a hashtag once, just to see what it felt like; I just wanted to be one of the “in” crowd. And honestly, I felt like a lost a little bit of my soul just by hitting that pound sign.
I mean, I get it. All the kids are doing it. It’s a way to categorize messages in the Twitter-sphere and to mark keywords or topics, yada, yada, yada. But let’s be honest, it is simply getting to be too much. #overkill #takingawayfromthemeaningoflife #givesmeamigraine
Well, Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon decided to go to war with the hashtag on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and created a skit in which they have a conversation completely in hashtags, which shows the absurdity of the hashtag craze; even The Roots‘ Questlove shows up at one point. We know, this is Live for Live Music, and what does this have to do with music? Well, you know what? There is a war on basic linguistics and syntax, and somebody has to fight back. So have a coke and a smile and….well, hopefully you know the rest. #dontcare #thinkitsfunny #lovejimmyfallon #lovejtimbsevenmore #takeachillpill #lifestooshort
