Todd Snider‘s livestreams have become something of a weekly regiment. For nearly a year now—since Snider was forced off the road by the pandemic—he has gone live almost every Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. The only thing that has really changed about the folk troubadour’s streams has been the name. Beginning as What It Is, the name later changed to The First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder, and is now finally The Get Together.

With such a strong foundation of routine, many viewers were likely shocked when tuning in to Sunday’s installment of The Get Together to see “guest reverend” Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon) joined by Mimi Naja (Fruition) performing live from Snider’s The Purple Building studio in Nashville. Herman explained away Snider’s absence saying, “Bishop Snider is on a sabbatical, I do believe he’s on a mission trip in outer Zimbabwe. He’s hanging out, getting some stuff done…We’re gonna start off with several of Bishop Snider’s sermons, then I might give you a Vince Sermon.”

The duo ran through takes on Snider classics including “Sideshow Blues”, “Alright Guy”, “Conservative, Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Males”, one of Herman’s favorite Snider sermons, “Play A Train Song”, and more. Though Snider’s Sunday-morning raspy voice has become an alarm clock for many, it was a nice change of pace to have Herman and Naja leading the congregation. Between Herman’s gut-busting laughter as he chuckles through Snider’s humorous lyrics and Naja’s calming vocal presence alongside her mandolin prowess, the two brought a new dimension to Snider’s repertoire.

Herman also took the opportunity to debut some new, original songs including one about a much-needed “Bluegrass Vacation” and another called “Find A Better Way”. He also took the time to preview the new Leftover Salmon record, out in May, with “We’ll Get By”. The Get Together with guest preachers Vince Herman and Mimi Naja also saw covers from Guy Clark, John Prine, and more as well as selections from Herman’s Leftover Salmon and Great American Taxi catalogs.
