As Tedeschi Trucks Band, the twelve-piece led by Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, readies for a run of co-headlining tour dates with Warren Haynes‘ Gov’t Mule, the decorated collective has shared a new pro-shot video of “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” (The Beatles) from a now-legendary set ten summers ago.
“She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” is the latest single from Tedeschi Trucks Band’s forthcoming Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN’) with Leon Russell, out September 12th via Fantasy Records. The new live album documents Tedeschi Trucks Band and Leon Russell’s star-studded tribute to Mad Dogs & Englishmen, the storied 1970 Joe Cocker tour known for its large, raucous ensemble, which Russell helmed as musical director. In September 2015 at Virginia’s LOCKN’ Festival, Tedeschi Trucks Band revived this landmark event, infusing it with their own blend of Southern soul, blues, and rock and roll.
In the new pro-shot video from that night, Trucks’ longtime Allman Brothers Band cohort Warren Haynes and New Orleans six-string slinger Anders Osborne join the fray for a take on the Abbey Road deep cut famously reimagined by Cocker, Russell, and the rest of the Mad Dogs conglomerate in 1970. Haynes leads the way on vocals, his voice appropriately a touch more gravelly than usual, before Trucks rips a compact but potent blues solo and Anders and Warren follow suit. The Mad Dogs & Englishmen tribute concert took place at LOCKN’ Festival in Virginia 45 years after the original tour. That night, TTB’s 12-piece ensemble and Russell welcomed original Mad Dogs members including as Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Chris Stainton, along with an eclectic group of special guests including Haynes, Osborne, Chris Robinson, and Dave Mason. The stage often swelled to over 20 musicians, echoing the original tour’s grand, communal spirit. The setlist included memorable performances of beloved hits like “The Letter” (featuring Tedeschi on lead vocals) and “Feelin’ Alright” vocals by Mason, who wrote the timeless anthem, and added guitar from Anders Osborne, as well as “The Weight,” “Delta Lady,” “With A Little Help From My Friends” and many more. Leon Russell’s passing the following year only further cemented the concert’s historical significance.
Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN’) serves as the audio companion to TTB’s documentary Learning to Live Together: The Return of Mad Dogs & Englishmen (2021). The film, a unique retelling of the tour as seen through the lens of Tedeschi Trucks Band, blends archival footage with new interviews and performance and rehearsal footage from the LOCKN’ tribute set.
