Back in 2009, Ben Ellman of Galactic & Quickie Mart formed NOLA Bounce group Gypsyphonic Disko, and it’s all about ass. In case you don’t know, bounce music is an energetic style of New Orleans hip-hop music, typically characterized by call-and-response-style party mode and Mardi Gras infused Indian chants. It’s rap gone drag, where the style of dance is frequently hypersexual and said to be the originator of the “twerk”. Needless to say, when Ben Ellman started this eccentric group, we were immediately intrigued.

With Hanukkah coming to a close, we are reminded of the 2012 tradition of Gypsophonic Disko’s “Dreidel Song” featuring Katey Red, the original queer bounce rapper. Katey is responsible for breaking through the regional genre, striding past the stigmas against cross-dressing, and inspiring fellow bouncers like New Orleans bounce queen Big Freedia. Enjoy the video below!
