After teasing a major announcement, rumors were confirmed yesterday when Prophets Of Rage was revealed to be a supergroup containing three of the four Rage Against The Machine members, alongside Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real and DJ Lord. The band also announced their first-ever concert, planning a day-of performance at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, CA.

In a preceding interview, the band members spoke about the band’s necessity to exist in a tense political climate. The tagline on the website says it all: “We can no longer stand on the sidelines of history. Dangerous times demand dangerous songs. It’s time to take the power back.”

The interview also revealed plans for the band to play a mixture of songs from all three catalogs, and the group delivered from start to finish. The band opened, predictably enough, with the Public Enemy song from which the band gets their name, “Prophets of Rage,” before rocking into Rage’s “Guerilla Radio” and “Bombtrack.”

By all accounts, the band aptly covered the Rage Against The Machine material, though the absence of Zack de la Rocha was strongly felt. Chuck D and B-Real are wonderful vocalists, but there’s nothing quite like de la Rocha. The band even said there would always be a space for him should he decide to return to the stage, so we can keep our fingers crossed.

All in all, the band rocked over 20 songs, bringing out iconic tunes from each band’s catalog and two originals – songs called “Shut Them Down” and “The Party’s Over.” The originals probably stood out more than anything else, drenched with the unique energy of these five stalwarts of live music. We can only hope this band continues to make their own music instead of relying on old covers.

Still, it’s never a bad thing to hear most of Rage Against The Machine playing hits like “Know Your Enemy” and the show-closer, “Killing In The Name.” It’s never a bad thing to hear Chuck D rapping on “Fight The Power” either, that is for sure.

Check out a couple videos from the performance, uploaded by Cypress Hill on Facebook.

As the band’s second website clock ticks towards another announcement, we’re certainly excited to see what more Prophets of Rage has in store.
