The Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off a four-night run at the Beacon Theatre last Friday night, bringing out several special musical guests including Jerry Douglas, Jaimoe, and the venerated Taj Mahal. Taj and Douglas were both present during TTB’s encore performance of the blues number, “Leavin’ Trunk.”

TTB has graciously shared a backstage video of the preparation leading up to the performance, featuring Taj and Jerry Douglas playing in full force with Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and the TTB gang. The song “Leavin Trunk” was penned by Sleepy John Estes, but popularized by Taj Mahal on his 1968 eponymous debut album.

The “practice” plays out more like a jam session, with Taj wailing away on the harmonica throughout the whole take. It’s great fun, and we’re sure you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.
