Over the last year, we’ve seen plenty of headlines about Weezer and covers. What started as a fan’s plea for Weezer to cover Toto‘s “Africa” prompted the band to cover a different Toto smash, “Rosanna”, earning them a spot in the (totally made up) Trolling Hall of Fame. They eventually did cover “Africa” and even recorded it as a single—which turned out to be their highest-charting release in years. The whole saga wound up inspiring a viral SNL sketch that’s worth the watch for any music fan.
Now, in the wake of their newfound success with covers, Weezer has announced a new cover LP, The Teal Album, out today via Crush Music/Atlantic Records. The surprise release of The Teal Album comes in the leadup to the release of Weezer’s newest collection of original material, The Black Album, which is due out on March 1st.
In addition to their viral “Africa” cover, The Teal Album features Weezer’s takes on Tears for Fears‘ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, The Eurythmics‘ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”, a-ha‘s “Take On Me”, The Turtles‘ “Happy Together”, Black Sabbath‘s “Paranoid”, Electric Light Orchestra‘s “Mr. Blue Sky”, TLC‘s “No Scrubs”, Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean”, and Ben E. King‘s “Stand By Me”. You can listen to The Teal Album below.
