Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to New York on Friday and Saturday to round out the group’s six-show 2025 residency at the Beacon Theatre. The final two shows of the 2025 TTBeacon run, a longtime autumn tradition that shifted to May this year, brought the Derek Trucks– and Susan Tedeschi-led 12-piece’s total concert tally at the storied Upper West Side theater up to 64. That puts them third on the venue’s all-time list, behind only Steely Dan (67) and another little group featuring Derek Trucks called the Allman Brothers Band (239).

While Derek didn’t join Allman Brothers until 1999, ten years into the iconic Southern rock band’s history at the New York venue, his combined ABB/TTB resume puts him virtually neck and neck with the likes of Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks—the Allman Brothers originators he joined as a young prodigy, whose flame he now carries into the present with his own juggernaut outfit.

At the end of Saturday night’s performance, after being surprised backstage with a cake celebrating 64 sold-out shows at the Beacon Theatre, Tedeschi Trucks Band (plus special guest keyboardist Deshawn “D’Vibes” Alexander) took its 64th Beacon curtain call. Pianist Gabe Dixon, seizing the moment, assumed his seat and sauntered into a solo, instrumental take on The Beatles‘ “When I’m Sixty-Four”. It stayed neither solo nor instrumental for long. Soon, the horns joined in, adding a second line-like shimmer of festivity to the tune. Then, the crowd, plus the rest of the band in the wings: a joyous chorus of voices singing the words, wondering aloud how the love they feel right now might grow as time passes.

“Thank you so much,” Tedeschi said afterward, “It’s ’cause of you guys that somehow that number exists.”

From the husband-wife connection at the group’s core to the “welcome-to-the-family” magnetism of its deep lineup to the many active and implicit ways in which its shows guide the teachings of the past into the future (see: Thursday’s jam with blues legend Buddy Guy; the frequent Allman Brothers Band homages; Saturday’s hat-tips to birthday boy Bob Dylan; the cathartic Sly & The Family Stone medley that followed the “When I’m Sixty-Four” sing-along; etc.), Tedeschi Trucks Band is a group built on love and affection—a sentiment clearly reciprocated by 64 sold-out Beacon crowds.

Plus, this year’s Beacon Theatre run showed glimpses of what’s next for Derek, Susan, and company, and those glimpses provided plenty to be excited about. “Future Soul”, in particular, is one of the best new Tedeschi Trucks Band songs in years—a gritty, quotable rocker that has already proven its potential for igniting Derek Trucks’ guitar fireworks. “I hope the future’s got soul in it,” Tedeschi chants for the song’s chorus. That sounds like a future we can all get down with.

Susan Tedeschi won’t be 64 for another decade. Derek Trucks won’t get there until 2043. Many more TTBeacon shows will surely have taken place by then. Many things will have changed. Many more will have stayed the same. But just like the song, which asks but never answers its central question, the subtext feels certain: This band was made to last. This tradition is destined to continue. The future’s got soul in it. The love, as always, will persist.
