The juggernauts of Southern jam-rock, Widespread Panic, finished their two-day sonic conquest on the Live Music Capital of the World on Sunday. Austin’s Moody Center hosted the music and mayhem as the band’s storied fanbase trekked from all corners of the map and avenues of life. Widespread Panic loaded the Austin finale with tributes to their fallen comrades, including Michael Houser, Vic Chesnutt, Bloodkin’s Daniel Hutchins, and more.
Wasting no time, WSP stacked two jam sandwiches into the first frame before a sexy second set featuring an unbroken stream of steamy originals and a singular pointed cover, sharp as Cupid’s arrow. Firing up the engine of their ol’ reliable jalopy, Widespread Panic ignited the show with an opening “Driving Song” sandwich. “Disco” provided an instrumental breakdown and the bridge between these two fan favorites. After finishing out the second half of “Driving Song”, the tough riffs of “Little By Little” gave the hired gun, Nick Johnson, room to expand.
The second jam sandwich of the set wrapped “Good People” around JoJo Hermann’s dance with aliens during “Dark Bar”. John Bell’s voice cut like a hot knife during a gut-punch performance of Vic Chesnutt’s “Aunt Avis,” accelerating the tempo until racing out the screen door to the back porch into the back lands of “Holden Oversoul”. With one last transition, Duane Trucks and Sunny Ortiz shifted gears to close the first frame in the funereal funk during Bloodkin’s “Henry Parsons Died”.
Set break’s libations proved potent as JoJo blazed into a bawdy “Blackout Blues” to barge down the door of the second set (“In the middle of the night!”). “Diner” followed to provide soul nourishment for the famished. After the opener, JB shelved the slide for his guitar and leaned into a short and sweet improvised rap, “Come on we don’t open for another hour or two anyway / Sit down before the respectable people come in / There’s a little light shining just over the trees / Sliding down the snowy rooftop / Slipping through the cracks / Through the window / Keep my coffee cup a little warmer, a little longer.”

Exchanging improvised lyrics for improvised jams, the final five minutes of this song were pure rocket fuel that descended into the bass-heavy bowels of Vic Chesnutt’s underworld, “Blight”. This was Vic Chesnutt’s second cover in as many sets and only the third cover of the show. It would also be the last cover of the night. Always a rapscallion, the roguish bassist, Dave Schools, advocated his First Amendment rights and added, “Today is going to be my peaceful day. Right over there at Fort Worth.”
Taking off on a pair of high-altitude tunes and finishing the set with all originals, the heavy distortions of “Saint Ex” parachuted into the pristine piano and wholesome vibes of a Michael Houser-engineered “Airplane”. JoJo’s organ introduced a heavyweight “You Got Yours” to send the sound into a tailspin.

WSP tested the audience’s emotional fortitude during “Gimme” before grounding the crowd with “Blue Indian” and its comforting presence like a fond memory of an old chum (“Still right here, brave little friend”). Punctuating the set with an exclamatory bang, “Pigeons” hypnotized the bobbing audience with its beady, little eyes.
With a little time before the Moody Center 11 p.m. curfew, Widespread Panic dished out a three-song encore for the Austin finale. “We Walk Each Other Home” strolled the cobblestones of “Up All Night” until a foaming “Tall Boy” brewed an intoxicating close to the night and the run.
Next up, WSP sets sail for St. Augustine, FL, before heading to Birmingham, New Orleans, and Las Vegas. Maryland gets an early summer surprise for All Good Now, and Red Rocks‘ annual run is still waiting in the wings. Find tickets and tour dates here.
