Widespread Panic retook their throne onstage at Allianz Amphitheatre at Riverfront in Richmond, Virginia for the second consecutive night. Like the night prior, the juggernauts of jam rock and roll kept the music flowing, often uninterrupted, leaning into their new material while still serving up a selection of Bloodkin, Jimmy Cliff, Talking Heads, and Tom Petty covers.

Firing out of the gate, Panic started the show with the opening track of 2024’s Snake Oil King, “Little by Little”. The only cover of the set, Bloodkin’s “Who Do You Belong to?” maintained a lively tempo before descending into “Rock”. Sunny Ortiz’s percussion and John Bell’s slide guitar gave the song its characteristic flair.

Possibly indicative of a theme, a few of the following songs mentioned dogs and cats. “Steven’s Cat” segued into a “Driving Song” sandwich (“Bowl for the cat / bowl for the dog”). Halfway through, Panic swerved into “Blue Carousel” from 2024’s Hailbound Queen before changing gears to finish the sandwich.

Accelerating toward set break, the heavy riffs of “Papa’s Home” parked amidst the swirling organ of “You Got Yours”. To punctuate the set and get the audience dancing, Panic blazed through a jubilant fan-favorite “Ain’t Life Grand”.

The second set presented more covers as Widespread Panic opened with Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come”. This song was brought back at Red Rocks earlier this summer, and last night marked only the 6th time played—including the unforgettable sit-in with the songwriter himself during 2015’s LOCKN Festival.

A psychedelic flight of “Pigeons” perched among the flowing sonic waves of “Tacklebox Hero”. JoJo Hermann passed vocal duties back to JB for a coupling of dreamy covers, Talking Heads‘ “City of Dreams” and Tom Petty’s “Running Down a Dream”.

Richmond native Dave Schools led the charge into the bass barrage of a nearly 20-minute “Second Skin” before shedding the melody and breathing new life into J.J. Cale’s “Ride Me High”.

Still without stopping, Panic cracked open “Coconut”. John Bell was zesty and Jimmy Herring, the always-ready guitar slinger, seared high-voltage energy into the tune. JB equipped his slide for “Ribs and Whiskey” to close out the set with a finger-licking finish.

Saturday night’s encore featured three songs and an additional half hour of music. First, another new original, a spacey, forlorn “Cosmic Confidante” broke the silence. Consecutive covers wrapped up the Richmond run as Vic Chesnutt’s “Blight” slid into Jerry Joseph and Glenn Esparza’s “Climb To Safety”.

Memphis, Milwaukee, and Savannah are on deck with the recent announcement of a Capitol Theatre run in November close behind. Travel safe, Good People. Mempho is sure to be a smoker.
