For the second straight night, Widespread Panic uncorked its signature spirit to fill the glasses of the sold-out Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. Saturday’s show was already an instant classic before former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes joined Widespread Panic for the bulk of the show’s latter half.
Wasting no time, Widespread barreled into an entirely original first set with a dirty “Fishwater” sandwich. “Better Off” was wrapped inside the ebb and flow of the separated song, leaving the insatiable audience hungry for “Mo! Mo! Mo!”
Pausing for hardly a breath, Duane Trucks and Sunny Ortiz cruised into the rolling rhythm of “Pleas” until careening off the rails and into the piano introduction of “Bust It Big” with JoJo Hermann at the vocal helm. Jimmy Herring injected rocket fuel into the mix before John Bell eased into a soulful performance of “We Walk Each Other Home”.
A weighty “The Last Straw” tested the load capacity as the nine-minute jaunt brought us ever closer to set break. JoJo took the lead once more during “Nobody’s Loss”, the song’s third appearance in a first set in five years. Dialing up the intensity, Panic blazed into halftime with a scorchin’ “Halloween Face” made complete by its signature hellacious jam at the tail end of the tune.
Past the midway point of the run, Panic continued its trend of originals as Jimmy Herring kicked open the door of the second set with “Holden Oversoul”. Without stopping, the first cover of the night, J.J. Cale’s “Ride Me High” segued into the heavy riffs of “Papa’s Home”. The band stayed onstage while the drummers dueled, smothering percussive meats on top of the second sandwich of the evening.
A longer pause built anticipation, and the audience with a view of the movements behind Jimmy quickly rose to a roar even before Warren Haynes emerged from the shadows. Haynes joined the formation near Herring—who served a one-year term in the Allman Brothers in 2000 before Haynes returned to the lineup—and they weaved around each other in graceful synchronization like two heavyweight boxers for the rest of the night.
With the added firepower of Warren Haynes, the seven-piece mowed down Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Good Morning Little School Girl” before stacking and attacking the third jam sandwich, “Surprise Valley” with a heavy portion of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” inside. Warren shared the vocals for the Waits cover. Not quite done, the seven samurai carved out a finishing “Porch Song” for a coup de grâce.

When Widespread Panic walked back onstage for the encore, Warren Haynes followed, and the unruly crowd waited on bated breath. The quiet didn’t hold, and WSP + Warren launched into the band’s first performance of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” since St. Augustine’s summertime sizzler in 2019. With one final north Florida callback, Widespread and Warren covered Tom Petty’s “Running Down a Dream” to finish off Saturday night’s special.
