In addition to announcing the Puff of Smoke fall tour, The Wood Brothers on Wednesday shared the official lyric video for their third single from the album, “The Trick”. As Oliver Wood shared in a track premiere via MAGNET, “The Trick’ is about how we beat ourselves up with self-doubt and constant worry, and how nice it would be to be more bold and ignorant—which is easier said than done. But not giving a damn seems like the goal if you want to stay present, positive, and creative. The song itself was built upon a Fender Rhodes run through distortion and octave pedals that Jano Rix was riffing on in the studio. While that’s a different recipe for us, it was very much an improvised performance, so it has an energy that most of our fans can appreciate.” Check out the official lyric video for “The Trick” below.

Recorded at The Studio NashvillePuff of Smoke showcases the Wood Brothers’ unique combination of folk, gospel, and blues in an 11-song collection highlighting the progressive Americana trio’s unmatched chemistry and elevated songcraft. With the subtle wit and wisdom of John Prine and the down-home appeal of Willie Nelson, the album provides a soundtrack for uncertain times, offering a healthy dose of optimism in the face of geopolitical turmoil and spiritual adversity.

“We’re not in control and that can be good news. Puff of Smoke speaks to the idea of letting go and taking the ride,” Oliver Wood explained. “This album is a little bit schizophrenic and eclectic. It goes in a number of different directions.”

Chris Wood concurred, noting that the album marks the next chapter in the band’s nearly 20-year evolution. “There’s a lot to unpack musically in this band, and it’s been this evolutionary process over the years and on each subsequent record,” he explained. “Over time, the diversity of things we can do has all become part of our language.”
