Yo! MTV Raps, the iconic hip-hop show on MTV that ran from 1988 to 1995, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its initial premiere. In celebration, MTV is relaunching the show as a “linear and digital series” across its platforms. To kick off this Yo! MTV Raps reboot initiative, the series is hosting a concert at Brooklyn, New York’s Barclay’s Center dubbed “Yo! MTV Raps: 30th Anniversary Experience” on June 1st—for those not in attendance, the show will be live streamed on the network.
Given how much rap and hip-hop has changed since the early days of Yo! MTV Raps, it’s worthwhile to mention that the show will be sticking to its old-school roots. The event has tapped alumni of the show as well as the show’s hosts—Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover, and Doctor Dre—to relive the program’s glory days. Thus far, a number of hip-hop legends have signed on for the performance in addition to Dre, Lover, and Freddy, including Big Daddy Kane and the Juice Crew, Eric B. & Rakim, Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions, Fat Joe, Flavor Flav, Black Sheep, Pharcyde, Brand Nubian, Nice & Smooth, Melle Mel & The Furious Five, Yo-Yo, Onyx, EPMD, DAS EFX, Special Ed, Kid Capri, DJ Skribble, Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, and more. Furthermore, the concert will also host video tributes from other high-profile artists who can’t be there in person, including Eminem, Method Man, and Redman.
Tickets for the Yo! MTV Raps: 30th Anniversary Experience go on-sale on Friday, April 20th here.
