Have you ever been passing around a spliff, it starts to canoe, and someone fixates on it and tries to use saliva to even it out? That’s the offense the Zac Brown Band and Snoop Dogg aim to stomp out with their new single, “Let It Run”.
While the track’s relatively innocuous title and artwork depicting Zac Brown and Snoop Dogg riding horses in the desert could trick you into thinking this was a run-of-the-mill crossover country collab on paper, it only takes one line of lyrics (“Everyone was getting high…”) to realize that “Let It Run” is, transparently, a song about pot. Co-written by Zac Brown, Snoop Dogg (who adds a rap verse), Andy Frasco, Chris Gelbuda, and John WidoMakr, “Let It Run” uses clever but conversational wordplay and a radio-ready chorus to make Zac and Snoop’s views on sloppy stoners crystal clear:
Just let it run, let it run
If it’s burning kinda funny
We can roll another one.
It ain’t like we’re down to crumbs
We got more where that came from
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherf—er run
As co-writer Andy Frasco, no stranger to weed songs, wrote in an Instagram post about the track, “If you would have told 18 year old Andy, you were eventually gonna help write a song for Zac Brown & Snoop Dogg he would have cried. Willllld. Honored to write this with my partners in crime [Chris Gelbuda] & [John WidowMakr] on a crazy hungover day in vegas [sic]. Thanks [Zac Brown Band] & [Snoop Dogg] for believing in the idea! Hard work always pays off.”
