While millions took part in Black Friday celebrations following Thanksgiving, whether virtually or in-store, fans of the late, great Frank Zappa celebrated “Franksgiving” by watching the long-awaited documentary, Zappa, from Alex Winter and Magnolia Pictures. Though many expected the Friday, November 27th documentary arrival, Zappa Records and UMe surprised fans with a digital release of the documentary’s lengthy, 68-song soundtrack.

Titled Zappa Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, the digital release arrived in three discs. The first two discs feature Zappa originals as well as songs from his record labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, such as “No Longer Umpire” from Alice Cooper‘s 1969 debut album, Pretties For You, and The GTO’s “The Captain’s Fat Theresa Shoes”. Some of the Zappa originals include “Agency Man”, “Black Beauty”, and “Road Ladies”. Furthermore, a variety of live tracks made their way onto the soundtrack, including “Scumbag”, which Zappa performed at the Fillmore East in New York, NY in 1971 alongside The Mothers Of InventionJohn Lennon, and Yoko Ono.

The soundtrack also includes two classical compositions by Zappa’s lifetime inspirations Edgar Varese and Igor Stravinsky as well as several interview clips throughout. On the final disc, listeners can hear the film’s score by John Frizzell in full, along with a few more Zappa studio and live cuts.

In addition to the digital release, Zappa Records/UMe also launched pre-orders for several physical releases of the soundtrack on Friday. On Friday, February 19th, Zappa Records/UMe will release a 3CD edition of the soundtrack, several months before a 5LP box set release on Friday, May 7th. The vinyl release will be available on 180-gram black vinyl as well as on limited edition 180-gram smoke vinyl. A 2LP edition on 180-gram clear vinyl and a 21-track digital edition will also be available, which will include eight of the unreleased recordings from the Zappa archive, the SNL performances and 13 recordings from Zappa’s extensive career.
