The latest chapter in Bruce Springsteen‘s musical journey as one of America’s most storied songwriters and rock performers took him out of the stadium circuit and into the theatre for his Tony Award-winning one-man show, ‘Springsteen on Broadway.’ The production from the famous rock star landed at New York City’s Walter Kerr Theatre beginning in October of last year and has since been extended multiple times to now continue running through mid-December.
Much to the dismay of Springsteen’s local die-hard fans, the show will be coming to an end on December 15th, but they can relive all the on-stage magic the following day when a concert film of the theatrical show comes to Netflix on December 16th.
The popular streaming service initially announced their plans for taped special for “Springsteen on Broadway” back in July. On Tuesday, Netflix gave fans the scheduled arrival date in addition to sharing a wonderfully poetic trailer for the upcoming special. Just as he’s done in front of sold-out crowds throughout the show’s 13-month run, Springsteen appears in all his rock star glory in the trailer, regaling fans with his life story and career journey by means of both spoken word and song. Highlights from the first trailer include plenty of shots of “The Boss” as well as the intimate interactions he has with his supporters, which have given birth to one of the strongest artist-to-fan relationships in the music industry over the last few decades. He can be seen discussing (and singing) about his relationship with his parents, his hometown of Asbury Park and, of course, the muse who has helped keep him sane all these years while also playing alongside him in the E Street Band, his wife Patti Scialfa, who also appears as part of the show.
Speaking of that “Hometown” of his, Springsteen closes out the trailer by stating he still lives just 10 minutes from his hometown, which would explain why he’s able to make surprise appearances like the one he did to help reopen Asbury Lanes in the New Jersey oceanside town earlier this year.
Bruce Springsteen also announced earlier this month that he plans on releasing a 30-track double album recorded from his Broadway show which includes spoken word introductions to various songs.
