Globetrotting Grammy-winning guitarist Gary Clark Jr. passed another milestone on Tuesday with his debut at Manhattan’s famed Radio City Music Hall. The show came in support of Clark’s latest album JPEG RAW and featured openers The Free Nationals, best known as the backing band for multi-hyphenate Anderson .Paak.
With his backing band comprised of King Zapata (guitars), Elijah Ford (bass, guitars), Jon Deas (keyboards), Dayne Reliford (keyboards), JJ Johnson (drums), Shanan Colvin (backing vocals), Shawn Clark-Martinez (backing vocals), and Savannah Clark (backing vocals), Clark rocked through a two-hour, 16-song show that leaned heavily on his new release. He had more help along the way, welcoming special guests throughout the show including trumpeter Ephraim Owens (Tedeschi Trucks Band), lauded bassist/producer Brady Watt, and guitarist Jose Rios (The Free Nationals).
Throughout the show, the guitar gunslinger made a genuine connection with the packed crowd, parading across the stage at the start of “This Is Who We Are” to greet fans in the front rows. This was a special show for Clark, as he recalled walking past Radio City Music Hall in his early days of playing New York City and thinking to himself that one day he’d play the iconic venue. Dreams came true on Tuesday night, all made possible by Clark’s commitment to his craft and incredible talent which were on full display the entire evening.
