In the weeks since David Bowie’s passing, the universal reaction has been to honor the musician’s long legacy of artistic expression. Even with his dying breath, Bowie gave us Blackstar, an album akin to Mozart’s Requiem in its morbid beauty.

Interestingly, Newsweek has reported that Bowie had “a long list of unscheduled musical releases that Bowie planned before he died.” The source is unnamed, someone close to Bowie, and claims that the records will have been divided into eras, not necessarily to be released chronologically. While it is unknown if the material is previously unheard, the first of these recorded compilations could be released by the end of 2017.
Why not share everything at once? Bowie collector Kevin Cann explains, “Bowie only gave you just enough of everything to still keep you hungry,” he says. “Blackstar has only come out recently, which is enough for the moment. There’s plenty of time for other things.” Bowie bought back a great deal of Cann’s collection in the 1990’s, and Cann believes that Bowie’s archives are quite enormous. Bowie kept all of his works, even dating back to grade school.

The Newsweek report also indicates that Bowie did not make plans to write a memoir, though his artistic legacy is certainly deep enough to more than compensate. RIP Bowie, we still miss you.
