When Jam Cruise tapped Eric “Benny” Bloom to host a night of their nightly “Jazz Lounge,” fans got far more than they expected. Bloom is surely one of the most emotive trumpet players on the scene, but those who know him are well aware of his self effacing comedy stylings. Giving him an open mic and putting him in front of some of the coolest cats on the boat yielded a fabulous night of loose, kinetic jazz riffs, paired with a side of silliness.

Jam Cruise is known for its special “One-Of-A-Kind” musical happenings, and, in the spirit of the long-standing “Jam Room,” they recently began a “Jazz” centric nightly jam.  With Break Science‘s Borahm Lee, Lettuce bandmate Adam Deitch‘s talented father Bobby Deitch on skins, and Stanton Moore Trio bassist James Singleton, as well as a mid-jam appearance by the amazing Karl Denson on sax, Benny got the set off in fine fashion.

Check out this fun beginning to his set, merciless teasing and all, captured by our own Rex Thomson, below:

For fans of Lettuce, there’s certainly a lot to look forward to! Lettuce is hitting the Capitol Theatre on January 23rd, and drummer Adam Deitch’s side-project Break Science is coming to the Brooklyn Bowl on the 29th with a live band set! Then, on April 1-2, Lettuce will be hosting their very own Fool’s Paradise destination festival event featuring GRiZ, Vulfpeck, Chris Robinson’s Soul Revue, The Nth Power, and GOLDFISH.
