On Saturday, the Rhode-Island-based alt-rockers, Deer Tick, stopped by CBS This Morning’s Saturday Sessions for a short performance on network television.

The quartet performed three songs off their 2019 compilation album, Mayonnaise. Frontman John McCauley led the band into a Ben Vaughn cover, “Too Sensitive For This World”. A flanger effect over his guitar produced a delay-style sound and complimented his dramatic vocals. They picked up the pace in the somber tune after a bridge section before McCauley ripped a solo.

McCauley then pulled out what looks like a guitar-mandolin hybrid for “Old Lady”. Guitarist John O’Neil used a pink Stratocaster for his lead riffs while bassist Chris Ryan and drummer Dennis Ryan kept a steady rhythm section. The adagio passages complimented solemn lyrics, and the band was met with applause from the studio audience upon its ending.

“Hey! Yeah!” was a more upbeat track where both McCauley and O’Neil showed off their ability to lay down some lead phrases. McCauley shredded a quick solo on his Jazzmaster before O’Neil followed him up with one of his own.
