Programmers at Austin City Limits delivered Foo Fighters fans a blast from the past with footage of the band performing “My Hero” in 2008 from their episode which would air the following year. The video release comes ahead of the premiere of the “Foo Fighters Rock ACL” special set to appear on Saturday on PBS.

The Dave Grohl-led alternative rockers performed on the flagship concert program in 2008 and 2014, with both performances airing the next year. As COVID-19 continues to put the live music industry on hold, Austin City Limits is no different as producers mine the archives for tribute episodes and other pre-recorded content. The remaining half of the show’s 46th season will see specials devoted to Spoon, Allen Toussaint, and a “Texas Icons” episode highlighting performances from recently-departed outlaw country stars Billy Joe Shaver and Jerry Jeff Walker.

This clip finds the Foo Fighters brimming with energy despite already being 14 years into their still-burgeoning career. With Grohl out front on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, the song begins on a whimper as the extensive percussion setup is utilized to its full potential. Slowly but surely, however, Grohl builds up his intensity by ramping up his vocal energy before truly blasting the song off about two minutes in. Ever the performer, Grohl takes the show on the road as he parades through the crowd and organizes a singalong before closing out the tune.

“I’m sure I can speak for every musician when I say that being asked to come play Austin City Limits is practically like getting a medal,” Grohl said in a statement. “As a musician, it’s something to aspire to and if you actually achieve that then you wear it like a badge.”
