I’m Tim, a new documentary coming to Netflix, tells the story of Avicii, the Swedish EDM DJ and producer who became an international sensation before his death by suicide in 2018 at age 28.

The film, whose title nods to Avicii’s real name, Tim Bergling, presents a look into his life featuring never-before-seen footage and interviews, with Tim as the narrator. The documentary is set to arrive on Netflix on December 31st, 2024 alongside a concert film capturing the DJ’s final live performance, which took place at Ibiza’s Ushuaïa.

Per an official synopsis of I’m Tim, directed by Henrik Burman and produced by Björn Tjärnberg, the documentary tells “the unlikely story of Tim Bergling, a shy and insecure boy who, without realizing it, suddenly created one of the world’s most loved artists—Avicii. Through unique home movies and a huge private archive, we get to follow Tim on a winding journey through life—from the very first breath at the maternity ward in Stockholm in 1989 to the tragic end in Oman in 2018. This is a film where Tim himself is the narrator and he shares his inner self in a way we haven’t heard before. Through himself and everyone close to him—family, artist colleagues and best friend—we get to know Tim, the boy behind Avicii, for the first time.”

In addition to interviews with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, record executive Neil Jacobson, singer and Avicii collaborator Aloe Blacc, and more, a trailer for the film released on Wednesday features a bittersweet voiceover from Avicii about his passion for his craft. “I always loved music,” he begins. “I knew that whatever I wanted to do later in life, I wanted to do something creative.”

The trailer also dips its toes in the waters of the DJ’s widely panned headlining performance at Ultra Music Festival 2013 and its effect on Avicii, when Bergling’s open-minded creativity backfired. “I was running after some idea of happiness that wasn’t my own. I didn’t like being a persona,” Bergling reflects in a voiceover. Adds record executive Neil Jacobson, “As an artist you have to start looking at yourself as a character, and the line[s] between Tim and Avicii were blurred.”
