Billy Strings stopped by Ionia, MI, just a few miles outside his hometown of Muir, where he’s known as William Apostol, to play a show at the Ionia Theatre on Saturday.
The concert was part of the ongoing Family Strings tour, where Billy is playing is a series of shows with his stepfather, accomplished bluegrass guitarist Terry Barber. The venue only added significance for Billy, as the Ionia Theatre was one of the first places he played, “I remember being up on that stage when I was 6 years old,” he told the local Ionia Sentinel-Standard.

The show largely featured Billy returning to his country-bluegrass roots with a much more traditional show and setlist. There was a minimal amount of the improvisation that many fans have come to expect from the 27-year old rising star, but it allowed a great opportunity to examine the roots of what made Billy the musician he is today.
