After a breakout 2019 that saw the release of their first album and a resulting Grammy nomination, Black Pumas have announced the launch of their own signature beer from 4th Tap Brewing Co-Op.

The Austin, TX-based band has teamed up with the Austin brewing company to create the Stay Gold Hoppy Pale Ale, named after one of the songs on the modern soul outfit’s self-titled debut album. The collaboration will hit shelves in Texas beginning on August 7th.

The beer features a combination of flavors representing both guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada and singer Eric Burton‘s palates. One of the defining characteristics of the Black Pumas Stay Gold Hoppy Pale Ale is the use of Cryo Mosaic hops, said 4th Tap co-founder, John Stecker.

“Mosaic hops are already pretty delicious and the Cryo Mosaic side of that means basically that we’re using just the pollen from the hops—there’s no vegetal matter going in,” Stecker added. “It really lets us get these huge, big, intense flavor notes.” That means the beer is heavy on the citrus—with a hint of earthy pine and bubblegum—and light on the bitterness.”

The beer was originally intended to debut at a hometown Black Pumas concert at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater in Austin, but that was canceled due to the pandemic. The band has still decided to move forward with the release, and have also added a charity element by sharing the proceeds with the Austin Justice CoalitionAfrican American Youth Harvest Foundation, and Austin NAACP.

“This is the big time, having your own beer. Forget all the other stuff,” Quesada told October of having their own beer. “We’re actually retiring after this,” he said jokingly.
