Bob Dylan has remained a constant in American music and culture for the better part of 60 years, and he now holds a unique distinction to show for it: With the successful release of his 39th studio LP, Rough and Rowdy Ways, which enters the Billboard 200 chart at #2 this week, Bob Dylan is now the first artist with a Top 40 hit album in every decade from the 1960s through the 2020s.
Rough and Rowdy Ways also marks Dylan’s highest-charting album since 2009’s Together Through Life, which peaked at the #1 spot in 2009. As Billboard notes, “He captured eight [Top 40 albums] in the 1960s, 14 in the ‘70s, seven in the ‘80s, four in the ‘90s, seven in the ‘00s, nine in the ‘10s, and now one in the ‘20s. … (The 2020s decade is still young, so a number of other acts could join him in this achievement.)”
The 10-track album from the famous folk-rock singer-songwriter is his first since 2017’s Triplicate and includes the previously-released singles “I Contain Multitudes”, “False Prophet”, and the JFK-inspired, 17-minute “Murder Most Foul”.
