Bob Weir and Wolf Bros returned to action with their first performance since closing LOCKN’ last month with a show at Humphreys in San Diego, CA on Wednesday. The show marked the first of four total shows that the Grateful Dead-inspired trio have scheduled throughout the month of September as part of a brief early fall run.

The band’s 11-song opening set started with “The Music Never Stopped”, a fitting choice for someone like Weir who seems to always be playing somewhere. The first half of the show continued with a pair of covers in Rob Wasserman‘s “Easy Answers” and The Temptations‘ “Standing on Shaky Ground” before returning to “The Music Never Stopped”. The music indeed continued with Bob Dylan‘s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” before turning to “Gonesville” from Weir’s Blue Mountain solo album. The set continued with “Deep Elem Blues” before closing with a mix of Dead staples in “Tennessee Jed”, “Loose Lucy”, “Lost Sailor”, and “Saint of Circumstance”.

The band returned to the stage to start the second half of the show with a cover of The Beatles‘ “Blackbird” before charging into the Dead playbook with “Cassidy” and “Truckin'”. Following a cover of Eddie Cooley‘s “Fever”, the band returned to “Truckin'” and kept the Dead hits coming with “Scarlet Begonias” and “I Need A Miracle”. The second set closed with another Dylan tune in “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and “Going Down the Road Feelin’ Bad”. The show came to a fitting close with a rendition of “Ripple”.
