Bob Weir and Wolf Bros were back at Sweetwater Music Hall on Thursday for the third night of their week-long run at the Mill Valley, CA club. Following the first two nights of their Sweetwater residency on Monday and Tuesday, and a night off on Wednesday, the trio picked up right where they left off by delivering a mix of Grateful Dead tunes, some covers, and a special guest on cello.
The show opened with Weir on his acoustic guitar to lead the group through a pair of covers beginning with a take on Memphis Jug Band‘s “K.C. Moan” followed by “El Paso”. The trio continued with the cowboy-inspired sounds of “Only a River” from Weir’s 2016 Blue Mountain album, followed by another cover with Johnny Cash‘s “Big River”. “Sugaree” was up next, and featured the first sit-in of the night from cellist Alex Kelly, followed by yet another cover with The Coasters‘ “Young Blood”. The set came to a close with the classic combination out of the Dead songbook, “Lost Sailor” into “Saint of Circumstance.

Longtime Dead roadie Steve Parish was on hand to help introduce the band back to the stage to open the second half of the show with a take on “Me and Bobby McGee”. The trio then turned their gaze back to the Dead songbook for performances of “Eyes of the World”, “West L.A. Fadeaway”, and Jerry Garcia‘s beloved ballad “Bird Song”, which once again featured a sit-in on cello from Kelly. Following a take on the Beatles’ psychedelic anthem, “Tomorrow Never Knows”, it was back to Deadland with the fan-favorite “Shakedown Street” and finally “Morning Dew” to close the set. The band returned to close the show with a one-song encore performance of “U.S. Blues”.
The band returns to Sweetwater for what is supposed to be a very special Valentine’s Day performance on Friday.
