Nestled somewhere between pop, rap, and a dinner cabaret, Boyfriend has made a name for herself as one of the most creative voices in the contemporary New Orleans music world. On Saturday, May 3rd, during the second weekend of Jazz Fest 2025, she’ll take her idiosyncratic approach to music and performance to New Orleans’ Toulouse Theatre for a Fest by Nite performance featuring members of fellow staple NOLA act The Revivalists [ticketing information].
Born Suzannah Elizabeth Powell and raised in Nashville, TN, Boyfriend spent time in Los Angeles earning a degree in creative writing from UCLA and working in television production before relocating to New Orleans. There, while working as a teacher, she discovered a natural ability to rap while drunkenly freestyling with friends and began to develop a nuanced Boyfriend persona (steeped in feminism, social commentary, artistic expression, and subversion of gender norms) and aesthetic (including large glasses, hair rollers, and vintage lingerie). After releasing a string of well-received singles, Boyfriend dropped her debut full-length LP, Sugar & Spice, in 2022.
Despite her unorthodox approach to rap music, she has been recognized by many of the luminaries in the local hip-hop world. Last year, she was featured on NOLA bounce music pioneer Big Freedia‘s “El Niño” alongside Big Easy icon Lil Wayne.

In addition to her many appearances at the Fair Grounds during the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Boyfriend has developed a tradition of hosting late-night shows during Jazz Fest featuring members of The Revivalists. This year will mark the first time the annual Boyfriend and Revivalists combo during Jazz Fest will be featured as part of Live For Live Music’s Fest by Nite series.
