Instead of a traditional memorial service, James Casey wanted his loved ones to throw a party, so on Monday, November 6th, Brooklyn Bowl will host a memorial concert celebrating the life and music of the late saxophonist, vocalist, and producer.

James Casey’s passing at age 40 sent a wave of grief across the live music world this past summer. A fixture of various different musical circles, Casey made an indelible mark on countless lives in his community and beyond through his virtuosic musicianship, friendship, and uplifting perspective amid his two-year battle with colon cancer. Proceeds from the celebration of life concert will benefit the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (CCA) and Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH) – two organizations dear to his fight against the disease and his advocacy mission.

The memorial concert will be open to the public and feature performances reflecting the breadth of Casey’s musical achievements, which include his full-time role in Trey Anastasio Band as well as collaborations with J.Cole, Chromeo, Talib Kweli, Lettuce, Phish, Billy & The Kids, Danger Mouse, Dave Matthews Band, and more through the years. The music for the event will be curated by Louis Cato (The Late Show bandleader), while Raydar Ellis will be spinning some of Casey’s favorite songs throughout the night.

Organizers have announced a livestream of the James Casey celebration of life concert via FANS.live for those who cannot attend in person, available on a donate-what-you-want basis. The event will also offer a line of limited-edition James Casey merchandise, available to attendees at the Brooklyn Bowl as well as via pre-sale online. Commemorative merchandise will include James Casey t-shirts, hoodies, beanies, enamel pins, and posters, all available now via the Relix Marketplace. Additional speciality merchandise including limited copies of Casey’s 2022 holiday EP, A Little Something for Everyone, and limited-edition flat brim snapback and bucket hats from Grassroots California, which Casey designed prior to his passing, will be available in person at the Brooklyn Bowl (and will also be available to order online via Grassroots’ website starting November 3rd).
