BTTRFLY Quintet, the jazz-focused Denver supergroup featuring members of Big Gigantic, Lettuce, Break Science, and more, has announced its first-ever New Orleans performance on Friday, May 2nd at Toulouse Theatre as part of Live For Live Music’s Fest by Nite series during Jazz Fest 2025 [get tickets].

While BTTRFLY Quintet features notable players from the worlds of funk and electronic music like saxophonist Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), drummer Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Break Science), keyboardist Borahm Lee (Break Science), trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom (Lettuce), and bassist Hunter Roberts, they first came together during the pandemic thanks to a web of Denver connections and a shared desire to explore the boundaries of jazz.

“This was the pandemic,” Deitch recalled of the band’s origins in a 2022 interview with Live For Live Music. “None of us are on tour, we’re all friends, we all enjoy each other’s company. Let’s just make a record and put it out independently. And then we got to play a bunch of shows in Denver.” The group’s debut album, Coast, arrived later that year.

Though the musicians in BTTRFLY Quintet found their fame on different ends of the musical spectrum, they all shared a common love of jazz that was more often than not relegated to their free time and one-off performances. With this new venture, they would be able to put that love front—on their own terms.

“We all just totally agreed on not doing what’s called straight-ahead jazz, which is more traditional jazz,” Deitch said. “We wanted to add something futuristic because we’re all in sort of modern groups and we dig modern sounds. But the idea to have songs in some different time signatures, have drum solos, sax solos, and that sort of thing, that comes from us having a love for jazz music and just American Black music in general and how to combine it all into a thing that represents us and where we’re at and something kind of different from what we’re known from.” Read our full BTTRFLY Quintet feature interview here.
