Richmond, VA jazz and hip-hop fusion outfit Butcher Brown is prepping for a busy fall and winter ahead in 2023. In addition to rolling out singles from the band’s forthcoming LP, Solar Music, due to arrive via Concord Jazz on October 6th, the band is gearing up for an extensive global tour featuring stops throughout the U.S. and Europe.

The latest single to arrive from Solar Music is a thematically appropriate reimagining of Roy Ayers deep cut “This Side Of Sunshine”. The rendering by Butcher Brown—comprised of Corey Fonville (drums), Andrew Randazzo (bass), Morgan Burrs (guitar), Marcus “Tennishu” Tenney, (trumpet, saxophone, vocals) and Devonne “DJ Harrison” Harris (multi-instrumentalist)— takes on a dreamlike quality as it contours the soothing melodies of the original and adds lush layers of sonic sonic sheen.

The choice of a song by Ayers—whose combination of jazz, funk, and soul made him a pioneering figure in emerging spaces like acid jazz—is a telling selection for Butcher Brown, which has been carving its own lane at the nexus of soul, funk, rock, and hip-hop. “It’s important to give masters their flowers,” Fonville said of the track. “Roy Ayers created a new wave that impacted so many of the younger artists and with his originality he made timeless classics. This song is everything we love about his music and casually is a sleeper you don’t hear people discuss.”
