Veteran bassist Carl Dufrene Jr. has passed away. The Louisiana-native musician’s passing was confirmed in a post by North Mississippi Allstars, with whom Dufrene collaborated for many years, most recently on the band’s 2019 album, Up and Rolling. As of publication time, no cause of death had been specified.

Prior to joining up with North Mississippi Allstars for Up and Rolling, Dufrene—lovingly known as Bayou Buddha—toured and performed with various notable acts including Anders Osborne, The Trongone Band, and more. Of his work on Osborne’s 2016 album, Flower BoxLive For Live Music remarked that Dufrene offered up the “perfect counterpoint to Anders, the focused solidity of his tone providing welcome contrast to the splashy guitar froth churned up by Osborne.”

“You had the heart of a 9 year old prince and the soul of a 98 year old boat maker,” Osborne said in an emotional note on Dufrene’s passing.

Noted Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), “Carl was a great improvisational partner, fearlessly heading down uncharted spontaneous compositions while never losing the groove. We were honored to make music with Carl for years. He always elevated the music. Carl was a national treasure, a true ambassador of Louisiana musicality and hospitality.”

Let’s play some funky music for Brother Carl Dufrene Jr on this sad day. Carl was a wonderful friend, family man and musician. Carl would selflessly do anything to keep the mood upbeat, the music funky, and full of fellowship and positive vibes and inspiration. Carl was a great improvisational partner, fearlessly heading down uncharted spontaneous compositions while never losing the groove. We were honored to make music with Carl for years. He always elevated the music. Carl was a national treasure, a true ambassador of Louisiana musicality and hospitality. The Bayou Buddha will be missed by friends the world over but live on in the music and in our hearts.

My sweet boy Carl,  my dear sensitive brother and soul pardna!!  This is not what I wanna do right now… We were supposed to make it way passed retirement and get to talk about all the shit we did done, and survived! There was supposed to be glory and joy at the end of our struggles. ………. I’m writing these confusing and emotional paragraphs both crying and cursing.  I’m really mad! I’m devastated! Heartbroken and I am sentimental. Somewhere in the stillness of my soul I still see your tender smokers face and weathered bayou smile. I could always feel your anxious restlessness and calm glee all at the same time, like one big embrace.  My sweet boy Carl. I REALLY don’t wanna write this!  But I will, cause you’re my buddy, you’re my compadre and I fucking love you.  You had the heart of a 9 year old prince and the soul of a 98 year old boat maker.  This lifetime around we met through music and the art of making sounds and I will always treasure all our fantastic road memories and endless conversations we shared.  For the rest of my life Carl, for the rest of my life. 🙏🏽 📷 @dinopphoto
