On Thursday, Charley Crockett released a new live video for “Lily My Dear”, one of the new songs off his latest album, Welcome To Hard Times. The new album, Crockett’s seventh in five years, hears the country music revivalist dive deeper into the vintage themes of an oft-shunned genre.
Though Crockett released several music videos for songs off Welcome To Hard Times, this one breaks from those entirely. The videos for “Welcome To Hard Times”, “Run Horse Run“, “Don’t Cry”, and “Fool Somebody Else” all exist in the same neo-Spaghetti Western universe and revolve around central themes and plot points. Meanwhile, the live video for “Lily My Dear” is inspired by classic country TV performances in the style of George Jones.

In the video for “Lily My Dear”, we find Crockett playing the song’s main character who laments, and eventually reminisces, on a broken relationship. Filmed at Sam’s Town Point in Austin, TX, the visual accompaniment takes on a vintage feel with the use of furniture, rotary phone, and even smoking indoors. Crockett’s performance is authentic, both in the sense that the audio was captured live, as well as the way he can embody his lyrics with only the slightest glance.
“I was sitting in front of a little club in El Campo, TX last year messin’ around on my banjo, Dolores. I had this lick I was pickin’ and a melody came to me,” Crockett said of the song in a press release. “I kept playing it round and round and my friends were with me so we all just started throwing lyrics at the wall to see what would stick. I kept the ones that I like the best. It’s an old story. The best ones always are. When you write something that feels like it’s 150 years old it’s a good feeling. The banjo will give one to me every now and again if I respect it. It’s one of my favorite tunes.”
