Over the weekend, small-screen dreams became a reality as Charlie Day joined Portugal. The Man for the It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia classic “Dayman” during the band’s show at the Hollywood Bowl.
The song came to prominence in the season 4 episode “The Nightman Cometh”, centered around Charlie’s deeply troubled musical of the same name (though the song technically appeared a season prior in an unfortunately titled episode). In 2014, six years after “The Nightman Cometh” premiered on Always Sunny, Portugal. The Man began regularly including “Dayman” in its sets. The band has performed it live over 120 times to date.

The Man, give a heartfelt speech about how he has been inspired by frontman John Baldwin Gourley‘s young daughter, Frances, who suffers from rare genetic mutation DHDDS, and perform “Time’s A Fantasy”. More cameos were in store as “Weird Al” Yankovic emerged for a performance of his 2020 Portugal. The Man collaboration, “Who’s Gonna Stop Me”.
For those in the crowd wondering how in the world they would ever top a sit-in from “Weird Al”, Portugal The. Man brought out Day to close the show with an ornate version of “Dayman” far beyond anything seen on Sunny. Day brought a bit of Paddy’s Pub with him, sporting his character’s iconic Army-style green coat and even bringing with him the haunting Dennis Reynolds sex doll (“Dennis”) introduced in season 13.
