Eagle-eyed American Idol viewers caught a quick glimpse of Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country keyboardist Nathan “Sugarleg” Aronowitz on Sunday’s broadcast. The 29-year-old multi-instrumentalist made a brief cameo in the fifth and final episode of auditions for ABC‘s long-running singing competition.
Hosts Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood continued their nationwide search for the country’s next biggest singer, which turned up the Nashville keyboardist/guitarist/singer. His appearance lasted only a few seconds, during which time he made an impression on hit-making country singer-songwriter Luke Bryan. When Aronowitz introduced himself to the judges as “Sugarleg,” a confounded Bryan asked “What the hell’s that mean?” before Nathan’s appearance ended.
It is unclear how Sugarleg’s audition went, what he sang, or if he was invited to Hollywood for a spot on the show. Fans will have to tune in to American Idol tonight, March 31st, at 8 pm ET to see if Nathan “Sugarleg” Aronowitz made the cut. While some fans in the DDCC Facebook group worried that American Idol could pull Sugarleg away from the group, his wife Emily Aronowitz assured them, “He would never leave the band don’t worry!”

Though the niche jam band subculture and the overproduced glamor of American Idol may seem worlds apart, this is not their first intersection. Season five (2006) winner Taylor Hicks has a particular penchant for jam bands, performing in a Widespread Panic cover band in college, and even singing alongside Sugarleg himself at Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country Christmas Jam in Nahsville two years ago. Hicks has also sat in with Widespread Panic, the Allman Brothers Band, Umphrey’s McGee, ekoostik hookah, and others, and was even a paid attendee on the second-ever Jam Cruise in 2004 before performing on the boat in 2011.
Sugarleg is set to return to the stage with Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country on April 3rd in Charlotte, NC to kick off a spring tour throughout the Eastern United States. Find tickets and a full list of tour dates here.
