Dave Matthews Band welcomed Warren Haynes to sit in for the first time since 2019 last night at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ.

DMB’s relationship with the acclaimed guitarist and Gov’t Mule frontman dates back to 1993, when he joined the band for the first time at legendary NYC activist rock club Wetlands Preserve after hosting Dave at the Ritz Power Jam earlier that year. Since then, the pair has collaborated over 50 times, most recently at The Gorge in 2019.

Matthews and company brought out Haynes at the end of the band’s set, which featured a mix of older tunes, a few songs from new album Walk Around The Moon, and covers including Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain” and the Commodores’ “Brick House”. Rather than falling back on familiar tunes, Haynes began the sit-in by adding a guitar solo to Walk Around The Moon track “Monsters”. He then stayed on stage for 1991 fan favorite “Tripping Billies” and a set-closing “All Along The Watchtower”, two songs on which he has previously sat in.

After an encore break, Matthews returned to the stage for a two-song curtain call comprised of the unreleased song “Sister”—played with just Carter Beauford (drums), Rashawn Ross (trumpet), and Tim Reynolds (guitar)—and “Crush”, which featured the full band.
