Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds returned to Riviera Maya, Mexico this past week for the 2024 edition of their annual destination event. In addition to guest appearances by Mavis Staples, Jason Isbell, and The Lone Bellow, all of whom performed sets of their own during the four-day concert vacation, Dave and Tim welcomed longtime friend and collaborator Trey Anastasio of Phish for a sit-in on the event’s final night.
Following an opening night on Thursday featuring a performance by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Dave and Tim took the stage on the beach on Friday for their first of three headlining sets of the weekend. The parade of special guests got started quickly as the acoustic duo welcomed Jason Isbell on Neil Young‘s “Cortez The Killer” and later recruited Mavis Staples and Dave’s vocal coach, Robert “RAab” Stevenson to assist on a rendition of The Band‘s “The Weight”.
On Saturday, Matthews and Reynolds were joined by longtime Dave Matthews Band producer John Alagía on acoustic guitar and vocals for The Beatles‘ “If I Fell” midway through their performance. Later in the set, The Lone Bellow’s Kanene Pipkin took the stage for a vocal duet with Dave on Bob Dylan‘s “Oh, Sister” before her two bandmates, Brian Elmquist and Zach Williams, joined them for Neil Young’s “Old Man”.
Finally, on Sunday, Dave and Tim got some help from Trey Anastasio, who made his way down to Riviera Maya early ahead of Phish’s destination event this week. After taking the stage and settling in at the piano to add some ivory texture to “So Damn Lucky”, Anastasio grabbed his trusty Languedoc to assist on guitar and vocals for “Dodo” and The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek”.

Of note, Anastasio and Matthews have traded sit-ins in Mexico on various occasions. Most recently, in 2022, Trey sat in with Dave and Tim during their Sunday encore before Matthews returned the favor with a Phish guest spot on the opening night of Phish: Riviera Maya a few days later.
