The six-piece rock band will return to the tourist-friendly area of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula on January 16th-19th, 2020 in Riviera, Cancun. The 2020 event will take place at the Moon Palace Cancún, a change in location from the 2019 edition which took place at The Barceló Maya, although it’s worth noting that bands like Phish which also host their own winter destination event in the area, are moving out of The Barceló in 2020, so Dead & Company fans should also expect a change in location for next year’s shows as well.
The 2019 edition of Playing In The Sand saw the band deliver three performances over four nights, with a surprise pool-side performance from noted guitarists Eric Krasno and Marcus King also taking place during one of the sunny afternoons. Announcements on Monday did not state whether Dead & Co would recruit any other artists to join them on their trip south of the border next year, but details for the 2020 event should emerge as summer edges closer to the fall months.
Fans who have attended the 2018 and 2019 Playing In The Sand events will get the first chance to purchase tickets when an alumni pre-sale begins on Friday, July 12th at 1 p.m. EST. First-time attendees can purchase their tickets when general on-sale begins on Monday, July 15th at 1 p.m. EST. Head to the event’s official website for more info.
The announcement comes about 36 hours after Dead & Co wrapped their 2019 summer tour following a pair of shows at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO over the holiday weekend. The band continues to grow in popularity thanks to the cultural revival of the Grateful Dead over the last few years, in addition to younger members like John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge helping to recruit a new generation of Dead fans.
