Brooklyn’s The Sultan Room, the immersive concert oasis tucked unassumingly between a döner kebab kiosk and an upscale Turkish restaurant, is among the New York music scene’s best-kept secrets. In years past, one could have similarly applied the “well-kept secret” designation to New Haven, CT quartet Eggy, a band that has been gradually building a devoted following for the better part of a decade. On Friday night, however, Eggy gathered a sold-out crowd at The Sultan Room to kick off its first-ever headlining tour and begin a new chapter in the band’s story—a chapter called “the secret is out.”
The past year has served as a preamble to Eggy’s fall 2022 coming-out party. With a steady stream of new live shows beaming out to a national audience on nugs.net, a run of notable festival sets and sit-ins at The Peach Music Festival, Domefest, Vineyard Campout, and more, headline-grabbing performances like the Midnight Scramble at Levon Helm Studios featuring special guests from Goose and Rusted Root, and a batch of new studio material in the works, the quartet’s profile has risen considerably in recent months.
That building buzz was tangible inside the packed Brooklyn venue on Friday as Jake Brownstein (guitar/vocals), Dani Battat (keys/vocals), Mike Goodman (bass/vocals), and Alex Bailey (drums/vocals) got their headlining campaign rolling with a lightning-in-a-bottle performance featuring old songs and new, eclectic covers tried and true, and plenty of the scintillating full-band improvisation that has propelled their rise. Even with a full slate of tour dates ahead of them (they went on to perform in Massachusetts and Vermont on Saturday and Sunday, respectively), it was hard not to think beyond this outing to the next go-around, when they will likely have outgrown the beautiful yet compact confines of The Sultan Room. The ladder in the NYC market is steep, but considering the band’s current trajectory, Eggy seems destined to climb it.
