The Flaming Lips emerged from their plastic bubbles for a performance of “Will You Return / When You Come Down” for Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday. The performance took place at the first venue the band ever played, the Blue Note Lounge in their hometown of Oklahoma City, and featured a guest appearance by Micah Nelson, spawn of country music royalty Willie Nelson and a musician in his own right.

Though the Flaming Lips were out of their sanitary cocoons, the band still took proper COVID precautions by dangling sheets of plastic from the ceiling in front of their faces. Taken from 2020’s American Head, “Will You Return / When You Come Down” came as an obvious choice for the band’s homage to its own history, with multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd beckoning frontman Wayne Coyne, “Will you return / when you come down?”

For his part, Nelson fits in with the rest of the Flaming Lips freaks like a glove. Between his own unique stage outfit, his rusted-out custom Gibson Les Paul, and the very Flaming Lips guitar solo he provides with the overdrive seemingly cranked all the way up, one would think he was a member of the band this entire time. In 2019, Nelson’s band Particle Kids toured alongside the Flaming Lips.
