Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes was one of the many notable musicians who penned a lovely tribute to late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, who died on Monday evening. So it only made sense that his rock band also shared their emotions through the music by dedicating their performance at The Fillmore in Detroit, MI on Tuesday in Hunter’s memory. In doing so, the quartet made sure to mix in some of Hunter’s most beloved Grateful Dead songs into the second half of their two-set show.

Gov’t Mule kept the first set filled with mostly originals beginning with the distortion-fueled “Bad Little Doggie” and continuing with songs including “Brand New Angel”, “Steppin’ Lightly”, “Larger Than Life”, “Banks Of The Deep End”, and “Funny Little Tragedy” before sending fans into set break with a cover of Ann Peebles‘ “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home”.
The band returned to open the second half of the show with the lovely “Lay Of The Sunflower” before taking a brave turn into the musical abyss with their first Dead cover of the night with “Dark Star”. The covers continued with “Loser” and “Sugaree” before Mule returned to their own material with “Rocking Horse” to close the set. The band returned to the stage with special guest and Michigan native musician Larry McCray on guitar for a one-song encore cover of “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” from Jerry Garcia‘s 1974 self-titled solo album.
