GZA, the multi-hyphenate hip-hop luminary and founding Wu-Tang Clan member, will perform his 1995 solo album, Liquid Swords, in its entirety in honor of its 25th anniversary as part of New York City venue (le) poisson rouge‘s LPR.tv subscription livestream series, which presents crowd-less performances from the venue’s dearly missed Greenwich Village space with full production and soundboard audio. The GZA Liquid Swords stream will take place on Friday, November 6th.

Liquid Swords marked GZA’s second solo release following the NYC native’s pre-Wu 1991 album Words from the Genius under the moniker The Genius, which failed to initially make much commercial impact. By 1995, however, Wu-Tang Clan was the hottest thing in the music world thanks to the success of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and RZA had begun shopping the group’s individual MCs out to different major record labels for their respective solo debuts—all of which the RZA produced.
GZA landed at Geffen Records for his first post-Wu record, and Liquid Swords was released on November 7th, 1995 to critical and commercial acclaim, peaking at number nine on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually earning a platinum certification from the RIAA. GZA’s complex lyricism and weighty, cinematic Samurai imagery have made the album a cult classic in the years since its release, earning it widespread praise as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.
