There is a great article written by Rebecca McHugh which appeared on Headcount’s Blog earlier today. The article discusses San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Departments proposed name-change to the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. Under a new partnership with Los Angeles-based nonprofit Levitt Pavilions, the theater may be potentially named “Levitt Pavilion San Francisco at Jerry Garcia Meadows.”
According to the article:
“The proposed change has ignited the ire of DeadHeads, almost 1,500 of whom have signed an online petition on change.org. The venue is just a few blocks from Garcia’s childhood home, and in the words of one petitioner ‘Jerry was a beautiful soul and deserves to have something named after him that is built to last’”.
Also discussed is the recent announcement that the lobby bar in Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre will be named ‘Garcia’, as the band had played some shows there in the 70′s. Among other places named after musical legends include ‘Joey Ramone Place’ in NYC on the corner of Bowery and East; ‘Frank Sinatra’ Park in Hoboken, NJ; and ‘Liverpool John Lennon Airport’.
What do you think about this? If you have a problem with this, check out the petition link and make your case heard. The more people that say something, the better.
