The Jerry Garcia Band‘s 1980 performance at Passaic, New Jersey’s Capitol Theatre will be released on vinyl for the first time this fall as part of Record Store Day‘s “Black Friday” initiative.
Announced via the Jerry Garcia website on Tuesday, GarciaLive Volume One: March 1st, 1980 Capitol Theatre will see the band’s performance at the New Jersey venue pressed on vinyl and sold to fans for the first time since the live album was first released back in February 2013. The limited-edition recordings will arrive on Black Friday (November 29th) as part of a 5-LP collection pressed on to 180gram vinyl of just 5,000 individually numbered, foil-stamped boxed sets. Fans who purchase the box set will also receive a free Mp3 download of the album’s mastered audio.
The album was remixed from the original 24-track recordings and showcases JGB’s performance towards the tail end of an impressive three-week tour along the east coast in the winter of 1980. There were two performances that evening—one early, one later—which saw Garcia’s career-spanning songwriting partner Robert Hunter even show up to sit-in during the latter to help play on “Tiger Rose” and “Promontory Rider”.
Other songs performed by the band that night included “Sugaree”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, ” “Deal”, “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”, and “Dear Prudence”, to name a few. The JGB lineup on that tour included bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Ozzie Ahlers, and drummer Johnny d’Foncesca.
David Gans, who co-hosts Tales from the Golden Road on the SiriusXM Grateful Dead channel writes in the album’s liner notes, “It’s hard to imagine a more diverse musical mind than that of Jerry Garcia.”
