Longtime Jeopardy! host (and aspiring rapper) Alex Trebek died at his home on Sunday after a long and public battle with pancreatic cancer.
Even amidst the chaos of the 2020 Presidential election, Trebek’s death rippled across popular culture and was mourned by mainstream news outlets as well as on social media. Additionally, some Jeopardy! die-hards within the music community made a point to pay tribute to the man who so eloquently and smoothly educated generations of Americans both young and old thanks to his lead on the long-running trivia game show.
“American Pie” singer Don McLean took to his Twitter to share a personal memory about when he performed at Trebek’s private Christmas party last year.
Alex asked if I would come and sing for him & his Jeopardy family at his annual Christmas party last year. I was on his “bucket list” he told me.
It was at a lovely Italian restaurant near his home. pic.twitter.com/gC6rkKyXFw— Don McLean (@donmclean) November 8, 2020
Anyone who knew Alex would know what a stickler he was about timing. When I arrived at the restaurant, I told Alex what I was planning on performing & without hesitation, Alex pulled out a sheet of paper that he hand wrote my songs on with their lengths…. pic.twitter.com/MS7WIyk74i

Dead & Company guitarist John Mayer also made a point to post a heartfelt tribute in Trebek’s memory. Although Mayer’s wasn’t quite as personal, he did reflect on the role in which Trebek and Jeopardy! played in entertaining himself and his family while growing up in the 1980s and 90s.
Guitarist Joe Bonamassa also shared a brief tribute and video clip from when his name was one of the questions (answers) from an old episode of Jeopardy!.
Umphrey’s McGee also reminisced on when they were immortalized as an answer on the program.
Rest In Peace, Alex Trebek.
