Longtime Jeopardy! host (and aspiring rapperAlex Trebek died at his home on Sunday after a long and public battle with pancreatic cancer.

Additionally, some Jeopardy! die-hards within the music community made a point to pay tribute to the man who so eloquently and smoothly educated generations of Americans both young and old thanks to his lead on the long-running trivia game show.

Dead & Company guitarist John Mayer also made a point to post a heartfelt tribute in Trebek’s memory. Although Mayer’s wasn’t quite as personal, he did reflect on the role in which Trebek and Jeopardy! played in entertaining himself and his family while growing up in the 1980s and 90s.

I was lucky to have grown up at a dinner table with two professional educators at each side, where, at any moment, a dramatically large dictionary might materialize and instantly settle a bet or address a curiosity. But all that ended at 7:00, when my father would pivot in his chair to face the TV atop the refrigerator and proceed to nail every answer (question) as if he he were a cowboy plinking cans off a fence. It was because of this duo of Alex Trebek and my dad – the host setting up the cans and the old man sending them flying end-over-end before the three contestants could reach their holsters – that I came to respect intelligence as a deeply valuable thing to seek and possess. I can’t think of an entertainer more enmeshed in the role of public servant than Alex Trebek. I’m deeply sorry to see him go and will always carry him in my childhood memories. Rest In Peace, kind sir.
