It’s been seven years since Jon Stewart left his anchor desk at The Daily Show and in that time he’s launched a new series, The Problem with Jon Stewart, directed the 2020 box office flop Irresistible, and also taken up the drums. What David Letterman is to beards Stewart is to beats, as he displayed with an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.

Stewart, who also produced the CBS late-night show from its debut until last year, sat for a wide-ranging interview. With host Stephen Colbert, who introduced Jon as an “aspiring drummer,” Stewart discussed everything from the PACT Act he was instrumental in passing to the recent anti-semitic controversy surrounding Kanye West and Kyrie Irving.

Stewart even took the opportunity to defend his friend and often-embattled comedian Dave Chappelle, who used his recent Saturday Night Live monologue to put his finger on the hot-button issue. Responding to claims from some that Chappelle’s monologue “normalized anti-semitism,” the humorist observed, “I don’t know if you’ve been on comment sections on most news articles, but, uh, it’s pretty f–ing normal.”

As the interview wound down, Colbert asked Stewart if he would play them out with The Late Show Band. Stewart had previously shown off his rhythmic skills in 2017, appearing on the No More Wine for Kittens single “Catastrophes”. Tuesday’s show saw Jon trade his guest chair for the drummer’s throne as he rolled into a funky take on the Commodores‘ classic “Brick House”.

Oh yeah, and then this band called LCD Soundsystem performed.
