After over 20 years away from live performing, Joni Mitchell returned to the stage on July 24th, 2022 at Newport Folk Festival. Surrounded by legions of followers and admirers, the impromptu performance marked the legendary singer-songwriter’s first live performance since 2000, and on July 28th, 2023, Rhino will release a live document of the historic occasion as At Newport.

Since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015, Mitchell shied away from the public eye and instead hosted impromptu jam sessions at her house. Dubbed the Joni Jams, these gatherings grew in lore akin to Levon Helm‘s Midnight Rambles. After seven years at home, top Americana and folk artists like Brandi Carlile, Wynona Judd, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Celisse, and many more joined Mitchell on stage at Newport Folk for the surprise set.

At Newport documents 12 live tracks including Mitchell classics “Big Yellow Taxi”, “A Case Of You”, “Both Sides Now”, and more. Mitchell produced the album alongside Carlile, who helped organize the Echoes Through The Canyon shows at The Gorge this coming June, featuring Mitchell’s first ticketed concert in over two decades. Physical copies of the album will also include liner notes from celebrated music critic Cameron Crowe.

“Mitchell emerged from the side of the stage, swaying smoothly, in fine summer-style with beret and sunglasses,” Crowe writes. “Her good-natured mood instantly set the tone. This performance would be an intimate gathering of friends, not unlike the Joni Jams she’d been hosting in her own living room over the last few years of recovery. Smiling broadly, Mitchell made her surprise appearance, taking her on-stage seat alongside Carlile. Within minutes, the news had rocketed around the globe. Mitchell was back, sparkling with enthusiasm, delivering a tender and passionate set of 13 songs, ending with a joyful sing-along of ‘The Circle Game.’”
