For the first time in 22 years, fans will be able to buy tickets to a Joni Mitchell concert. Announced on Wednesday by Brandi Carlile during an appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, the two singer-songwriters will team up for a pair of shows at The Gorge next summer billed as Echoes Through The Canyon.

Carlile will perform the first show in George, WA on June 9th with Mitchell headlining on June 10th with the Joni Jam, featuring a lineup to be announced. This news comes after the 78-year-old singer-songwriter delivered her first full live show since 2000 with a surprise set at Newport Folk Festival, where she played alongside Carlile, Marcus Mumford, Blake Mills, Lucius, Taylor Goldsmith, and more.

According to Carlile, Mitchell called her in the wake of the Newport Folk appearance saying, “I want to do another show.” They settled on The Gorge, which Carlile said is “one of the most beautiful venues in the world.” It’s also a venue she has a personal history with, making an annual pilgrimage to the bucolic amphitheater every summer, including last year for a show with Sheryl Crow and Amythyst Kiah also dubbed Echoes Through The Canyon. Located in upstate Washington, the show is also close enough to the Canadian border that the Alberta-born Mitchell’s fans from up north can cross over.

This marks the latest hurdle Mitchell has cleared since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015. While she recovered, a string of all-star musicians came to her house for what became affectionately known as the “Joni Jams”. The informal gatherings served as inspiration for her surprise set at Newport Folk Festival, which was her first public performance in 22 years.

“[Mitchell] always has a plan,” Carlile told host Trevor Noah. “She knows what she wants to do even if she doesn’t say it.”

Carlile also admitted that even the musicians onstage were surprised when Mitchell—sitting on her golden throne—took over lead vocals on the songs.

“We thought it was a jam. We didn’t know that she was going to sing all the leads on those songs,” Carlile said of Mitchell’s performance. “She just started singing. We had rehearsed the songs ourselves. And we didn’t know whether we should stop or what we should do, you know, so we just sang with her.”

The pairing is an idyllic fit, as Carlile has never hidden her avid Joni Mitchell super fandom. She has performed Mitchell’s landmark 1971 album Blue twice at special engagements, including last November at Carnegie Hall. Carlile appears to already be prepping for the Echoes Through The Canyon shows, treating early birds at one of her Red Rocks Amphitheatre shows last month to a soundcheck performance of Mitchell’s “A Case of You”.
